VCNB Moves To Visa® Debit Cards: Tap To Pay Is On Its Way!

There are some exciting changes coming to VCNB debit cards! This summer, VCNB will make the switch from Mastercard® to Visa® and will introduce important new features including Tap To Pay debit cards.

VCNB Chief Operations Officer Bryan Radabaugh explained that the bank is busy preparing for this switch that he believes customers will appreciate. “There will be some new things that customers will like, some new things on the back end that the bank will like and some things won’t change at all. We are pretty excited about it,” he exclaimed.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the new cards will be Tap To Pay With Visa® which allows customers a simple and secure way to make contactless payment with merchants where Tap To Pay technology is available. Radabaugh said this is important to modern consumers because it limits fraud risk. “If a customer inserts a card into a card reader, they are at risk of there being a skimmer device present.”  A skimmer collects information off a card and transmits it to a computer, providing criminals a proverbial golden ticket to account information.

With Tap To Pay, there is no where to insert the card. You simply tap the card on the outside of the reader and payment is made. “The card never needs to leave your hand if they have Tap To Pay.”

Visa is also known for superb handling of fraud scoring to protect customers against high risk transactions. Their Zero Liability Policy® protects consumers from confirmed fraud transactions on their debit card.

Many things won’t change though, including:

  • Mobile Wallet including Apple Pay®, Samsung Pay® and Google Pay®.
  • Make purchases anywhere that accepts Visa.
  • Earn uChoose® Rewards to redeem for gift cards, cash back, travel and more!
  • Control your card by placing limits and even turning off your debit card when you’re not using it.
  • Use your custom card image if you have Community Champions Checking, a School Spirit Card to benefit your home team, or a custom photo card.

The bank does ask debit card customers to do three things:

  1. Confirm that we have the correct mailing address and mobile phone number on file. You will not receive your new card if we do not have your mailing address. We also are asking customers to confirm their mobile phone number. When there is a suspected fraudulent transaction, we will try calling to confirm the purchase before turning off your card. If we call a wrong number or a home number and you’re not home, your card could be turned off unnecessarily. Log in to your online banking or call our Customer Service Team to verify your contact information
  2. Take a moment to consider what recurring payments are made with your debit card and provide your new card information to those vendors after you receive your new card. An easy way to do this is to view the Card on File list in our mobile app. Just log in to VCNB Mobile and select CARDS at the bottom of the screen. On the next screen, scroll down and then tap CARD ON FILE. On this next screen, you’ll see a list of the vendors that have your current card information. Reviewing this feature periodically is never a bad idea. After all, it’s easy to forget to cancel that streaming subscription or maybe you didn’t know that a vendor you rarely shop with has kept your card information handy for your next purchase with them.
  3. Watch your mail this summer. Your new Tap To Pay Visa debit card will be arriving soon!
